The council is responsible for waste management in Choma township. Waste is collected from bins in the town centre and from waste collection bays in certain residential areas and markets and delivered to the official dumping site on land near to the airstrip. There is no systematic waste collection service in the majority of residential areas or from individual house and businesses. In Zambia the most common method of domestic and commercial waste management is by burning or burying on the premises.
The bricks that are used are 100% homemade; they are all piled up, covered with mud and grasses. In the holes on the bottom a fire is made and the bricks are baked in their own oven. My colleague here disputes the quality of them and the illegal gravel excavating for the production causes other problems.
Mazabuka is another small town 2 hours north of Choma. It is famous for its endless fields of sugarcane. This attribute is well used by the city marketing. I was more interested in some references of the "planned" market.
VSO volunteers work on varying projects. In Livingstone they support childrens projects among other things. I joined on a gathering for children aged between 2 and 16.
Surface of Den Haag is 98 km² and 800 DSO colleagues versus surface of Choma District is 7300 km² and having 9 colleagues at the Planning Department. So everyone gives a hand when something has to be surveyed.
The goal is repairing a borehole in Mapanza that hadn’t been used since it was installed by a NGO in 2008. It is sad to see that they just constructed a borehole without involving the local government and community. Now the NGO is gone, reporting to its donors that they did so many good projects.. meanwhile they forgot to train someone for maintenance or after care and today we found out that it was also very bad constructed.
16 women: nurses, police, teachers, civil officers and business women gathered today for a workshop about the Integrated Development Plan. We had an interesting discussion after the SWOT analysis was presented by each group.
Tonic contains kinine, which was used to prevent malaria. You need a daily supply of 80L to prevent yourself these days....Although there is not much of its medical use left today, it is still a favourite in de tropicswith gin.
I'm an urban planner and designer from the Netherlands. I love cities and its citizens, its art, its places, its food, its spontaneous ideas, its culture and its architecture; the urban empire!!
This blog is a scrapbook of the travels I make and things that inspire me such as public spaces, conversed buildings, cities and shops.
