Berlage's first plans dating from 1920 were impossible to build due to the extensive design and high cost during the economic crisis. Years passed and the plan disappeared from agenda's. It was only when the then director threatened with his resignment, that Berlage was given the order to make a sober design. This design was approved in and construction started in 1931; opening took place in 1935. (source: http://www.gemeentemuseum.nl/index.php?id=034125)
